In the wake of 9/11, Congressman Kucinich opposed the war in Iraq and mobilized 126 members of Congress to vote against the use of force authorization. He was the only Congressman who visited South Lebanon during the Israeli war on Lebanon in July 2006 to view the destruction first-hand and denounce the killing of civilians.
Recently, he stood against the following:
• H. Res. 1765 (condemned Palestine’s unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state);
• H. Res. 5327 (unbalanced statements on missile defense systems being sent to Israel); and
• H. Con. Res. 385 (unfairly apportioned blame for a breakdown in negotiations as it neglected to mention the continued building of settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank).

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) urges its members to support the campaign to protect the last remnants of what was once a small but vibrant Arab American neighborhood in New York City's Lower Manhattan from impending demolition.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, "Little Syria" had been a hub for immigrants establishing their lives in America - Lebanese, Syrians, and other Arabs among them. A central place where peoples of all ethnic backgrounds came to engage in business, it was the first major Arab American neighborhood and is part of our collective story as Americans.

Today, only three buildings remain along Washington Street as relics of this cherished past: a tenement, a community center, and the former St. George’s Syrian Catholic Church. Todd Fine and Carl Antoun have dedicated themselves to the mission of ensuring that the piece of Arab American history told through the presence of these buildings is not erased. With St. George’s having been designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission as a protected landmark in 2009, Fine and Antoun are spearheading an urgent and inspiring campaign to establish the same status for the other two buildings. To succeed, they need the help of the community.

Arab Americans have always been a part of the American story. This unique trio of buildings along Washington Street stands as an affirmation of this fact. ADC fully supports this vital campaign, and calls on the Arab American community to take action and help preserve our collective heritage.

AAI Summer Interns

The Arab American Institute offers internships in Washington for Arab American college students and recent graduates interested in public affairs, advocacy and ethnic politics. The program is part of the Arab American Institute Foundation's commitment to youth leadership, along with scholarships and awards for public and community service.

Internships during the spring, summer and fall semesters at AAI offer hands-on experience in the workings of a busy non-profit with programs that include research and information, event management, community outreach, and media relations, among others. Applications are reviewed by senior staff to determine departmental assignments based on each student's area of study, extracurricular activities, and interests.

In addition to assignments at AAI, they also place summer interns in other organizations in Washington, including advocacy groups, the national political parties, government agencies, and organizations that focus on Middle Eastern affairs. 2011 Interns were offered positions at the ACLU, Al Jazeera, the Office of Congresswoman Karen Bass, the New America Foundation, USAID, and others.

Preference for summer internships will be given to those who are available for full-time placement and eligible for college credit. Those not eligible for college credit are allocated a stipend of up to $1,000 per month, based on hours. Applicants must either be U.S. citizens or permitted to work in the U.S. Interns receive either college credit or a stipend.

The National Council on US-Arab Relations' Washington Summer Internship Program offers undergraduate and graduate students a ten-week professional, academic, and career opportunity internship in the nation's capital. The program features a demanding mix of professional involvement, intellectual challenge, career exploration, and cultural encounters designed to provide interns with a rich and varied experience during their time in Washington.
• Professional workplace experience: Interns are placed with one of over a dozen Near East and Arab world-related organizations in Washington, D.C., where they are expected to work 35-40 hours/week under the direct supervision of their host organizations.
• Academic seminars: Interns take part in twice weekly seminar sessions designed to provide them with greater depth of knowledge about the Arab world, to underscore the cultural, economic, and political diversity of Arab states, and to explore the intricacies of Arab-U.S. relations.
• Site visits: Interns receive a behind-the-scenes look at many of the central institutions of federal government, national security policymaking, international diplomacy, and international business.
Sponsorship: The program is administered by National Council professionals and staff, together with more than two dozen of America's foremost scholars and leading foreign affairs practitioners. The programs, activities, and functions represented by the organizations and corporations that provide the professional work experience component of the program are varied. In June, Warren David became the new ADC president and the ADC has had quite a rich and active six months under his leadership. I’m ready to see what 2012 brings.

So far this year, the ADC has:
hosted its 31st National Convention, bringing together Arab Americans from across the US to strengthen the bonds in our community and to enhance the understanding of the issues that concern us all.

convened a Civil Rights Policy Conference to represent the views of Arab Americans on civil rights to policymakers in our nation’s capital. The conference was covered by C-Span, streamed around the world, and attended by representatives from the Justice Department, Capitol Hill and key nongovernmental organizations.

initiated the monthly Arabesque Lecture Series which gives Arab Americans and others a monthly forum through which to learn about and discuss issues of concern to our community. The first two lectures in the series discussed the role of Arab Americans in the Arab Spring and the inspirational role of Arab women in the Arab Spring uprisings.

launched the National Arab American Lawyers Association (NAALA), a network of Arab-American attorneys, legal practitioners, and law students, who will serve as a powerful legal backbone for the Arab American community.

organized the spectacular Turaath Cultural Event, which showcased the Meejana Dabkeh Troupe, Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih, the fashions of Iraqi designer Hana Sadiq and music from the Michigan Arab Orchestra Takht Ensemble. The event was attended by 1,200 people and was covered by major national media outlets, including National Public Radio (NPR) and the Huffington Post.

Oh, and they also resolved various civil rights, immigration, asylum and anti-discrimination cases and matters with a success rate higher than any of the past few years. ADC currently has nearly 500 open cases and, with diverse coalition partners, is taking the lead in addressing numerous federal policy directives and programs affecting the Arab American community.

The ADC plans to grow in 2012 by continuing its vital legal work to protect the civil rights of Arab Americans; convening a larger September Civil Rights Policy Conference; taking NAALA to at least 5 other cities so that wherever an Arab American’s civil rights are violated, ADC attorneys will be there to help; presenting 12 Arabesque monthly lectures; bringing the Turaath Cultural Event to at least two other American cities to highlight for even more Americans the splendor of Arab culture and expose young Arab-Americans to their rich heritage; and modernizing its website to better spread our message of human and civil rights for all.

ADC Launches Arabesque Lecture Series!

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is beginning a new program of monthly lectures – the Arabesque Lecture Series 2011-2012. Each month the series will feature a rich and diverse selection of topics ranging from current politics to culture in the Arab American community and the Arab world.

They kick off the program from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 5. Doors open at 5:30.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) with its strong grass-roots national network of chapters, activists, parents and educators, is committed to improve the quality of education about the Arab world.

This "Reaching the Teachers" campaign encourages Arab Americans to become more involved in their community schools, builds relationships with teachers associations, and sensitizes educators to the Arab American community and its concerns. While we have seen a steady improvement in increasing awareness of Arab-related issues, much needs to be done in spreading the word to the more than 300,000 social studies teachers and 12,000 school districts in the US.

Areas of Work Include:

* Build a national network of Arab-Americans who are involved in their children's education and in their local school systems.
* Advise, train, and provide resources for education activists and ADC chapter Education Committees. Support their work as they give classroom presentations, provide educational materials to teachers and school libraries, organize teacher training workshops, monitor textbooks for bias and misrepresentation of the Arab world, take part in school Human Relations or Minority committees, and respond to incidents of insensitivity or discrimination in the schools.
* Develop lesson plans and bibliographies on Arab culture, anti-Arab discrimination, Arab women, religions of the Arab world, and Palestine.
* Supply teachers and school systems with good educational materials on the Arab world.
* Provide resources on Arabs and Arab Americans to schools of education for use in multicultural teacher training.
* Place articles on Arab American concerns in national educational publications and professional journal for educators.
* Sensitize key multicultural educators, whose work influences the education profession as a whole to the Arab-American community and its concerns.
* Cultivate a national network of Arab-American educators.
* Heighten the profile of Arab Americans and the Arab world in the multicultural curriculum. Put Arab Americans on the multicultural education agenda.

ADC Anthony Shadid Internship Program

Since 1981, more than 400 students have participated in the ADC Research Institut intern program. Students from all over the country gather at the national office in Washington, DC each year to gain first-hand experience and knowledge about ADC issues and campaigns. The ADCRI is the non-profit affiliate of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), an Arab-American civil rights organization.

The intern program offers a variety of positions for leadership development. It educates students on issues of civil rights, the Arab heritage, and current events in the Middle East. It empowers them to educate others. Students gain practical training in community organizing, media relations, research and writing, legal issues, political action, educational outreach, and routine office work alongside our regular professional staff. The first few weeks of the summer program are centered on the annual ADC Convention in June.

Candidates must have completed at least one year of college. They can be undergraduates, recent graduates, or graduate and law students. Individual departments have their own requirements. Interns must be or become regular ADC members. Student memberships are available at discounted rates.

While the program is primarily oriented to Arab-American students, we encourage applicants of all ethnic backgrounds. Occasionally, international students are part of the intern program. Such students must arrange on their own to acquire US visas that authorize employment in the US. They may be available through university programs or organizations such as the Council on International Educational Exchange (www.ciee.org).

Summer Program

During the summer, up to 15 internships are available at the national office. The 11 week internships are full-time positions. We are asking interns to start as early in May as possible after the school ends. There is a $1500 stipend for undergraduates and $2000 for graduate students. Those who receive course credit do not receive a stipend.

Housing: We can advise interns about searching for housing and assist them in locating other interns who are seeking roommates.

Educational Program: One day a week, interns visit government and congressional offices, embassies, and other organizations. This introduces student to some of the policy-making institutions in the Washington area, which shape issues and events of concern to Arab Americans. There will be opportunities to take advantage of some of the speakers, films, conferences, and cultural programs in Washington which address Arab world issues. Each year interns write and publish Intern Perspectives, in which they reflect on their experiences at ADC and on the issues they have dealt with.
Deadlines

Applications for summer internships with the Legal Department are due by March 1. Applications for other departments are due March 15. Later applications will be considered, but early applicants will be given priority.
Semester Internships

Internships carry a small stipend. Full-time interns receive $400/month for undergraduates and $500 for graduate and law students. Volunteer positions for course credit are available during the academic year and are arranged on a case-by-case basis. Interns receiving course credit do not receive a stipend. Legal Department deadlines for application are: September 30 for fall, December 30 for spring. For other departments, applications are considered as they are received. Work hours can be accommodated to student class schedules.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) announced that Congressman James P. "Jim" Moran (D-VA) is the recipient of the 2010 ADC Legislative Achievement Award. The ADC is recognizing Congressman Moran for his outstanding leadership in Congress and his dedication to his constituents.

The award will be presented to Congressman Moran at the Saturday evening Gala Banquet on June 5, 2010, from 7:00 to 10:00, at the ADC's 30th Anniversary National Convention. This historic Convention will be held from June 4 through 6 at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, 2660 Woodley Road, NW, Washington, DC.

Congressman Moran, who is serving his tenth term as a US Representative from Virginia, has demonstrated tremendous leadership in support of the environment, women's issues, fair and open trade, and fiscal discipline. In addition to several other leadership positions, Congressman Moran is a senior member of the Appropriations Committee and chairs its Subcommittee on the Interior and Environment; he also serves on the Defense, and the State and Foreign Operations Subcommittees. Among many other achievements, Congressman Moran has secured millions of dollars in federal grants for local roads, educational programs, law enforcement, low income housing, and social services; and he has been very active in human rights issues, particularly those involving women in the developing world.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is appalled and offended by the discriminatory campaign tactics and messaging of Dan Fanelli, Republican Congressional candidate for the 8th District of Florida. In videos posted on his website, two Arabic speaking actors are depicted as terrorists. In a statement posted on his website, Mr. Fanelli states that, "all passengers are NOT created equally;" he then goes on to advocate for the use of illegal racial profiling at airports.

ADC has expressed concern directly to Mr. Fanelli, as well as the Republican National Committee and the Florida Republican Party. Our letter can be read by clicking here. ADC National President, Ms. Sara Najjar-Wilson, states, "Mr. Fanelli must act more responsibly in conducting his campaign and must be held accountable for his inappropriate actions. ADC condemns his hateful messaging and asks that the Republican National Committee and the Florida Republican Party immediately distance themselves from such harmful tactics."

Florida has a significant Arab and Muslim population, some of whom reside in the election District that Mr. Fanelli is seeking to represent. Many Arab and Muslim community members have been in Florida for generations -- they are Americans and many speak the Arabic language; they are also major contributors to the economic and social well being of the people of the State of Florida as well as our Nation. Many in the community are politically active; and, in fact, many Arab and Muslim Americans in Florida identify themselves as Republicans.

ADC will continue to monitor the situation in Florida and calls upon all community members within the 8th District of Florida to contact the Fanelli campaign, by e-mailing contact@electdan2010.com; and expressing their concern with the campaign and its messaging, and urging that such bigoted ads be immediately stopped.

The Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development offers summer internship positions with its educational program, the Palestine Center, for undergraduate students.

The internship program provides students with an opportunity to conduct primary-source research, develop writing and organizational skills, build valuable Washington contacts, gain hands-on experience and observe the extensive political and policy-related happenings in Washington. As important members of the team, interns gain valuable exposure to the functions of a highly productive non-profit organization working on issues of national and international significance.

Summer interns coordinate a summer lecture series, write an in-depth information brief on a topic related to the Palestine issue and assist with Palestine Center briefings, film screenings, and symposia. Interns are encouraged to attend relevant events in the area during their internship and to pursue avenues of research that are of personal interest, provided the research relates to the work of the Center. The Palestine Center staff provides guidance on research and logistics, helps to educate interns on the Palestinian issue and advises them as needed on career development.

A year after the bombs stopped falling on Gaza, full recovery remains elusive. Survival is a daily challenge. ANERA president Bill Corcoran has traveled to Gaza regularly during the past year to assess the damage and the effectiveness of humanitarian assistance. He will talk about current conditions and challenges for helping Gazans rebuild their lives.

Bill Corcoran has been president of ANERA since 2007. Before joining ANERA, he was Vice President of the Christian Children's Fund, a $300 million nonprofit serving children and their families in 32 countries. During the 1990s, Bill directed the Pontifical Mission for Palestine based in Jordan with projects there and in Iraq. He also supervised various projects in Lebanon and Syria.

This briefing is free and open to the public. A light lunch will be served to registered guests at 12:30 p.m. The briefing and question/answer period will be from 1:00 to 2:00.

Arab Nations Unite in Relief Effort for Haiti

While not drawing press attention to their efforts, Arab nations have united in an effort to provide needed assistance to support the humanitarian relief work being undertaken in Haiti. The Arab American Institute (AAI) believes that their generosity should be showcased, and has compiled a list of Arab nation contributions from information available to date.

"While not covered in the US media, we felt it was important to impart this information to the American public. The people of Haiti continue to rely on the world's compassion and generosity, and the Arab world's response to their needs has been significant and noteworthy," said James Zogby, Founder and President of AAI.

Countries listed in alphabetical order:

ALGERIA
Granted $1 million in emergency humanitarian aid.

BAHRAIN
Sent a disaster relief team to provide aid, pledged $1 million in relief and the Bahrain Red Crescent Society appealed for donations for Haiti.

EGYPT
Allocated medical supplies and personnel.

JORDAN
Established a 12-bed military hospital in Port-au-Prince, and are also feeding children who enter; dispatched two planes carrying a mobile field hospital, rescue team, doctors and six tons of aid supplies that include food, medicine and clothing.

KUWAIT
Sent 100 tons of food, medical supplies, tents and blankets; donated $1 million, delivered through the country's Red Crescent Society;

LEBANON
Airlifted 25 tons of tents, 3 tons of medicine, vaccines and other supplies; sent aid workers to help in relief effort.

MOROCCO
Sent $1 million worth of medical and pharmaceutical supplies.

PALESTINE
Individuals donated money, food and clothing to the Red Cross.

QATAR
Mobilized 26-person rescue team of soldiers, police and medical professionals; sent 50 tons of aid.

SAUDI ARABIA
Donated $50 million, which will be directed through the United Nations.

SYRIA
Airlifted 30 tons of humanitarian aid.

TUNISIA
Allocated $1 million to the United Nations Emergency Fund that was created for Haiti relief.

Bassem Khoury is the outgoing Minister of National Economy (MoNE) for the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah. Before his appointment, the Minister was Chairman of the Federation of Industries. He founded the Palestine Insurance Company, Pharmacare Premium Malta and Pharmacare PLC. He sits on the Boards of Birzeit University and St. Eves Jerusalem Human Rights Legal Centre.

The Palestine Center is an independent think-tank committed to communicating reliable and objective information about the Palestinian political experience to American policy makers, journalists, students and the general public. Established in 1991, it is the educational program of the Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development. Hummus World Record!

Lebanese chefs prepared a massive plate of hummus weighing over two tons Saturday that broke a world record organizers said was previously held by Israel — a bid to reaffirm proprietorship over the popular Middle Eastern dip.

"Come and fight for your bite, you know you're right!" was the slogan for the event — part of a simmering war over regional cuisine between Lebanon and Israel, which have had tense political relations for decades.

Lebanese businessmen accuse Israel of stealing a host of traditional Middle Eastern dishes, particularly hummus, and marketing them worldwide as Israeli.

"Lebanon is trying to win a battle against Israel by registering this new Guinness World Record and telling the whole world that hummus is a Lebanese product, its part of our traditions," said Fady Jreissati, vice president of operations at International Fairs and Promotions group, the event's organizer.

Hummus — made from mashed chickpeas, sesame paste, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic — has been eaten in the Middle East for centuries. Its exact origin is unknown, though it's generally seen as an Arab dish. But it is also immensely popular in Israel — served in everyday meals and at many restaurants — and its popularity is growing around the globe.

The issue of food copyright was raised last year by the head of Lebanon's Association of Lebanese Industrialists, Fadi Abboud, when he announced plans to sue Israel to stop it from marketing hummus and other regional dishes as Israeli.

But to do that, Lebanon must formally register the product as Lebanese. The association is still in the process of collecting documents and proof supporting its claim for that purpose.
Lebanese industrialists cite, as an example, the lawsuit over feta cheese in which a European Union court ruled in 2002 the cheese must be made with Greek sheep and goats milk to bear the name feta. That ruling is only valid for products sold in the EU.

Abboud says that process took seven years and realizes Lebanon's fight with Israel is an uphill battle. Meanwhile, he says, events like Saturday's serve to remind the world that hummus is not Israeli. "If we don't tell Israel that enough is enough, and we don't remind the world that it's not true that hummus is an Israeli traditional dish, they (Israelis) will keep on marketing it as their own," he said Saturday.

Some 300 chefs were involved in preparing Saturday's massive ceramic plate of hummus in a huge tent set up in downtown Beirut. The white-uniformed chefs used 2,976 pounds (1,350 kilograms) of mashed chickpeas, 106 gallons (400 liters) of lemon juice and 57 pounds (26 kilograms) of salt to make the dish, weighing 4,532 pounds (2,056 kilograms).

It was not clear what the former Israeli record was, and organizers gave conflicting reports on when it was made. But chefs and visitors broke into cheers and applause when a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records presented Abboud with a certificate verifying Lebanon had broken the previous record. The plate was then decorated with the red, green and white Lebanese flag.

A similar attempt to set a new world record will be held Sunday for the largest serving of tabbouleh, a salad made of chopped parsley and tomatoes, that Lebanon also claims as its own.

Taylor Royall Casting is casting specific ethnicities for the US Census 2010. This is a print campaign but there will be a casting at their studio as they want to see how candidates look on video.

Casting is Tuesday, September 22 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at Taylor Royall in Baltimore.

For those selected, shoot dates will be on days from October 7 through 16. Time will be a minimum of 2 hrs to a full day per talent and the possibility of more than one day per talent. Compensation will vary dependent on session time (ranging from a few hundred to over a thousand).

Here are the demographics: Ages are 20s and 30s primarily for both males and females. Also some mid-40s males and some late-50s males and females of these particular ethnicities: Iranian, Arab, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, and Armenian. Accurate ethnicity is important since the images will accompany language-specific materials to each of these groups.

Call 'Em Out!

For months, special interests and their Republican allies have been smearing health insurance reform to try to defeat it. As President Obama said last week, "I will not waste time with those who have made the calculation that it's better politics to kill this plan than improve it... If you misrepresent what's in the plan, we will call you out."

The is starting a new campaign called "Call 'em out!" When a Republican official violates the public trust by lying about reform, they'll be there to expose them.

First up is Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, who has claimed that health reform will lead to death panels -a claim so debunked that even former Republican Congressman and conservative pundit Joe Scarborough spoke out about Pawlenty's false claims. Now it's time for us to call him out.

Get started at the new "Call 'em out!" action center.

Set the record straight about Pawlenty's lies by calling him out on Facebook or Twitter. Expose his shameful tactics to his constituents in Minnesota. Call and tell him to stop lying about health insurance reform and playing politics with the nation's well-being. Spread the word about his false statements and extreme views.

If health reform is only a political equation to some GOP politicians, it's time to change the equation. Every Republican official must understand: If you lie about reform, the American people will call you out!

Deeds for Governor

On Monday, August 10 a group of leaders from the newdominionPAC (NDPAC) and the Arab American Democratic Caucus of Virginia (AADCV) met over dinner (thanks, Nora and Sam Burgan!) with the Democratic nominee for governor, State Senator Creigh Deeds. The program included welcoming remarks by the host, Samer Burgan, AADCV past president and current NDPAC vice president; a historic overview by NDPAC president Saba Shami; and a discussion of strategy by Sam Rasoul, the 2008 (and 2010, I hope!) Democratic candidate for Congress from Virginia’s 6th Congressional District.

Senator Deeds spoke of diversity in the Commonwealth and the role each group and community can play in moving Virginia further in the direction that the two democratic governors - Warner and Kaine - have move the state.
