The Palestine Center is an independent think-tank committed to communicating reliable and objective information about the Palestinian political experience to American policy makers, journalists, students and the general public. Established in 1991, it is the educational program of the Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development. The Palestine Center brings together people and resources within the American and Palestinian communities to educate about Palestine and the Palestinian peoples ongoing quest for sovereignty on their land, civil and political rights and an end to Israeli occupation. The need for an organization such as The Palestine Center can be found in the effects of the economic, cultural and political oppression Palestinians have endured and which continues on a daily basis in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the surrounding refugee camps and for Palestinians world-wide as they struggle to retain their homeland. Palestinians ability to maintain their daily lives and strengthen their democratic political system depends on international humanitarian and non-governmental organizations such as The Palestine Center.

Hummus World Record!

Lebanese chefs prepared a massive plate of hummus weighing over two tons Saturday that broke a world record organizers said was previously held by Israel — a bid to reaffirm proprietorship over the popular Middle Eastern dip.

"Come and fight for your bite, you know you're right!" was the slogan for the event — part of a simmering war over regional cuisine between Lebanon and Israel, which have had tense political relations for decades.
Lebanese businessmen accuse Israel of stealing a host of traditional Middle Eastern dishes, particularly hummus, and marketing them worldwide as Israeli.
"Lebanon is trying to win a battle against Israel by registering this new Guinness World Record and telling the whole world that hummus is a Lebanese product, its part of our traditions," said Fady Jreissati, vice president of operations at International Fairs and Promotions group, the event's organizer.

Hummus — made from mashed chickpeas, sesame paste, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic — has been eaten in the Middle East for centuries. Its exact origin is unknown, though it's generally seen as an Arab dish. But it is also immensely popular in Israel — served in everyday meals and at many restaurants — and its popularity is growing around the globe.
The issue of food copyright was raised last year by the head of Lebanon's Association of Lebanese Industrialists, Fadi Abboud, when he announced plans to sue Israel to stop it from marketing hummus and other regional dishes as Israeli.

But to do that, Lebanon must formally register the product as Lebanese. The association is still in the process of collecting documents and proof supporting its claim for that purpose.
Lebanese industrialists cite, as an example, the lawsuit over feta cheese in which a European Union court ruled in 2002 the cheese must be made with Greek sheep and goats milk to bear the name feta. That ruling is only valid for products sold in the EU.

Abboud says that process took seven years and realizes Lebanon's fight with Israel is an uphill battle. Meanwhile, he says, events like Saturday's serve to remind the world that hummus is not Israeli. "If we don't tell Israel that enough is enough, and we don't remind the world that it's not true that hummus is an Israeli traditional dish, they (Israelis) will keep on marketing it as their own," he said Saturday.

Some 300 chefs were involved in preparing Saturday's massive ceramic plate of hummus in a huge tent set up in downtown Beirut. The white-uniformed chefs used 2,976 pounds (1,350 kilograms) of mashed chickpeas, 106 gallons (400 liters) of lemon juice and 57 pounds (26 kilograms) of salt to make the dish, weighing 4,532 pounds (2,056 kilograms).
It was not clear what the former Israeli record was, and organizers gave conflicting reports on when it was made. But chefs and visitors broke into cheers and applause when a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records presented Abboud with a certificate verifying Lebanon had broken the previous record. The plate was then decorated with the red, green and white Lebanese flag.

A similar attempt to set a new world record will be held Sunday for the largest serving of tabbouleh, a salad made of chopped parsley and tomatoes, that Lebanon also claims as its own.

Call 'Em Out!

For months, special interests and their Republican allies have been smearing health insurance reform to try to defeat it. As President Obama said last week, "I will not waste time with those who have made the calculation that it's better politics to kill this plan than improve it... If you misrepresent what's in the plan, we will call you out."

The is starting a new campaign called "Call 'em out!" When a Republican official violates the public trust by lying about reform, they'll be there to expose them.

First up is Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, who has claimed that health reform will lead to death panels -a claim so debunked that even former Republican Congressman and conservative pundit Joe Scarborough spoke out about Pawlenty's false claims. Now it's time for us to call him out.

Get started at the new "Call 'em out!" action center.

Set the record straight about Pawlenty's lies by calling him out on Facebook or Twitter. Expose his shameful tactics to his constituents in Minnesota. Call and tell him to stop lying about health insurance reform and playing politics with the nation's well-being. Spread the word about his false statements and extreme views.

If health reform is only a political equation to some GOP politicians, it's time to change the equation. Every Republican official must understand: If you lie about reform, the American people will call you out!

Deeds for Governor

On Monday, August 10 a group of leaders from the newdominionPAC (NDPAC) and the Arab American Democratic Caucus of Virginia (AADCV) met over dinner (thanks, Nora and Sam Burgan!) with the Democratic nominee for governor, State Senator Creigh Deeds. The program included welcoming remarks by the host, Samer Burgan, AADCV past president and current NDPAC vice president; a historic overview by NDPAC president Saba Shami; and a discussion of strategy by Sam Rasoul, the 2008 (and 2010, I hope!) Democratic candidate for Congress from Virginia’s 6th Congressional District.

Senator Deeds spoke of diversity in the Commonwealth and the role each group and community can play in moving Virginia further in the direction that the two democratic governors - Warner and Kaine - have move the state. Senator Deeds invited our community to have a seat at the table and play an active role in both his campaign and administration.

The newdominionPAC is planning two fundraisers for Senator Deeds - one in Richmond on Sunday, September 13 and one immediately before the annual Arab American Candidates’ Night at the Tyson’s Corner Marriott on Sunday, September 27. For more information, contact sabashami@comcast.net

NDPAC Endorses Jody Wagner for Lt. Governor

The New Dominion PAC, which calls itself “the premier political voice for the Arab American community in Virginia,” endorsed Jody Wagner for Lieutenant Governor. New Dominion joins other progressive organizations supporting Wagner, including EMILY’s List, the Arlington Firefighters, the Arlington Police, and the Fairfax Coalition of Police.

“I am so impressed with Jody’s ability to reach out to people to form consensus. With accomplishments that include working with Mark Warner to fix the budget deficit, preserving the state’s critical AAA bond rating, and bringing Democrats and Republicans together in the legislature to pass the landmark 2008 higher education bond package, one thing has become clear: Jody won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. We need more leaders with her experience in Richmond” said Saba Shami, New Dominion’s President.

Said Wagner: “I’m thrilled to have the support of the New Dominion PAC. I look forward to working with them in the coming weeks and months to continue to build a grassroots movement across Virginia. With their help, we will continue to move Virginia forward.”

New Dominion PAC’s support is another sign of Wagner’s statewide strength and growing momentum. Earlier this week, Wagner announced the endorsement of Congressman Bobby Scott. Wagner has now been endorsed by three of Virginia’s six Democrats in Congress, forty-nine of the sixty-six Democratic legislators, fourteen Virginia mayors, as well as hundreds of local elected officials and thousands of grassroots activists and volunteers.

Middle Eastern Oil

Today, I received a robocall from Tom Davis. He asked a question about reducing our importing of Middle Eastern oil. Middle Eastern oil? Is importing other oil okay?

His message said to call the Thomas Jefferson Institute for more information so I did. I asked why they used the term "Middle Eastern" oil. The number one country from which we get our petroleum is Canada. Number two is Mexico. Third is Venezuela. So why are they concerned with the Middle East? The guy said thanks and abruptly hung up on me. I called back and got the answering machine and left a message asking for the answer to my question. Why did they single out the Middle East?

Since he's not going to answer my question, I thought all of you would call and try to get an answer. Let me know how you make out. Here's their phone number 703.440.9447.

Oh, the source of my information - the good old US Department of Energy. http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imports/current/import.html

100,000 Jobs? Really?

“[I] created over 100,000 jobs.”
- Terry McAuliffe, (Farm Team debate, April 19, 2009)

THE FACTS
According to the Washington Post, Terry McAuliffe hasn’t created any jobs in Virginia , as they noted in a front page exposé on his troubled business background:

“…McAuliffe boasted of launching five businesses in Virginia . It turned out that all five are investment partnerships, with no employees, registered to his home address in McLean .” –Washington Post, McAuliffe’s Business Background Could Prove a Liability. May 3, 2009

Here are some companies that have definitely created lots of jobs. No exaggerations or distortions.

Microsoft employs 95,029 people, worldwide. Did Terry McAuliffe really create more jobs than Bill Gates? (http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/insidefacts_ms.mspx)

IBM has 115,000 employees in the United States . Has Terry McAuliffe really created as many jobs as the inventors of the personal computer? (ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/annualreport/2008/2008_ibm_annual.pdf, p53)

Google employs 20,164. Has Terry McAuliffe created more jobs than the most successful Internet company of the past five years? (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Google-Earnings-Beat-Street.html)

If Terry McAuliffe’s companies were so big and so successful, how come no one has ever heard of them?

Arab Americans for Brian Moran

The Arab American community in Virginia is one of the oldest non-European communities with a history dating back to the 1860s. In modern times, Virginia attracted tens of thousands of immigrants who, by now, have become parents and grandparents.
Our young generation, proud of its heritage and grounded in its new roots in the United States, is claiming its rightful place in the American political system. Here in the great Commonwealth of Virginia, the community has become a first row participant, thanks to the work of our activists on the ground and the support we receive from our national organizations, such as the AAI and the ADC.

We have worked with Brian Moran for the past 20 years. We trust him to be the Governor of all Virginians, including our community. Let us deliver the winning margin on Tuesday, June 9th.

How can you help? Contact Brian’s campaign at http://www.brianmoran.com/

On Monday, March 30, make a free phone call to help save lives and limbs. Call your senators at 1-800-590-6313 and urge them to co-sponsor the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act of 2009 (S. 416), a bill that would ban the use of cluster bombs.

Two weeks ago, Congress and the president permanently outlawed exports of nearly all U.S. cluster bombs. Now, we need to take the next step and make sure the U.S. never again uses its vast arsenal of these weapons, which always end up harming more civilians than soldiers. Right now, 24 senators support S. 416. Your call can help increase this number by getting Senators Warner and Webb onboard—so far, neither one is a cosponsor. Growing co-sponsorship will show President Obama that he has the support he needs to sign the new global treaty banning these weapons and send it to the Senate for ratification.

Take Action: On March 30th, call toll free 1-800-590-6313, which will redirect you to the Capitol Switchboard. Ask for your senator’s office. Once you reach someone in the senator's office, identify yourself as a constituent and ask to speak to the legislative assistant who deals with foreign or military policy issues. If that person is not available, either give the below information to the receptionist or ask for the legislative aide’s answering machine and leave your message there.

Suggested talking points for your call:
· My name is [NAME], and I live in [CITY, STATE]. Thanks for taking my call.
· I am calling to encourage Senator [NAME] to cosponsor S. 416, the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act.
· Senator [NAME’s] co-sponsorship of this bill will help align U.S. policy with that of our closest NATO allies and ensure that we no longer use weapons that are known to have a record of killing more civilians than soldiers.
· Will co-sponsorship of this bill be possible? (Give or leave your phone number if you would like a call back.)

Tell your friends and family about the call in day. To learn more about cluster bombs, visit http://www.fcnl.org/weapons/mar30_more_info.htm

The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Beyond Band-Aid Solutions

Wednesday, January 14 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm

The Brookings Institution
Saul/Zilkha Rooms
1775 Massachusetts Ave, NW
Washington, DC

The latest conflict in Gaza has exacerbated an already fragile humanitarian situation and created another humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Even before Israeli airstrikes began, humanitarian agencies faced restrictions on personnel and shortages of vital supplies. The current round of fighting has left almost 800 people dead, thousands wounded and many more with limited access to food, water and health care. Though limited humanitarian aid has been allowed into the territory, humanitarian aid alone cannot be the answer to the problem. As with all conflicts, the answer lies in a political settlement.

The Brookings-Bern Project on Internal Displacement will host a discussion on the humanitarian situation in Gaza within the broader context of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Brookings Senior Fellow Elizabeth Ferris will provide introductory remarks and moderate the discussion. After their presentations, panelists will take audience questions.

Panelists
Michael Khambatta, Deputy Head, Regional Delegation for the United States and Canada, International Committee of the Red Cross

Tamara Cofman Wittes, Senior Fellow, Saban Center for Middle East Policy,The Brookings Institution

Andrew Whitley, Director, New York Representative Office of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)

National Day of Service

President-Elect Obama is calling for a National Day of Service on Monday, January 19. It's actually been extended to include the weekend.

The Democratic Women of Clifton will participate with a clean up of Clifton Road. Please join them in this community improvement effort by meeting them at the Clifton Elementary School parking lot, 7010 Clifton Road, Clifton, VA 20124 on Sunday, January 18 from 1:00 to 3:00. Please call Barbara Tuset for details - 703.638.4746.

Can't make it? You still can participate in the National Day of Service.

As the economic downturn has hit us, the number of people who don't have enough food has increased dramatically in our area. Food banks and other programs are struggling to do the best they can to address the hunger problem in Fairfax County. Some of the families they serve are one step from homelessness. To help, as part of the National Day of Service, the DWC is collecting gift cards for local grocery stores. These gift cards will be distributed through Our Daily Bread, a Fairfax County non-sectarian, non-profit that serves 60 families every month. Please purchase a gift card for a grocery store (e.g., Giant, Shoppers Food, Safeway) in $25 to $100 denominations and bring to the DWC meeting on January 11th at the Clifton Community Hall, or mail it to DWC, P.O. Box 143, Clifton, VA 20124. If you can't purchase a gift card, please make a check out to Our Daily Bread and put "Food Program" on the memo line and mail it to the DWC address above. We will see that it gets to Our Daily Bread so that they can purchase the gift cards. They plan to deliver your donations on Monday, January 19.

Democratic Women of Clifton

The Democratic Women of Clifton is an organization that provides a friendly, social atmosphere where Democrats can gather to discuss and educate themselves on important issues, learn about the political process, increase awareness in their communities, and help to elect great Democrats to local, state, and national office.

You don't have to be a woman or live in Clifton to join. Check them out - they do great work helping Democrats in Virginia!

Sharon Bulova

Let's do what we can to keep Fairfax County blue. Please support Sharon Bulova for Chair.
Vote for Sharon Bulova on Tuesday, February 3.
